Antibiotic Guide for Adult Community-acquired Pneumonia

Mild/moderate community-acquired pneumonia if patient is nil by mouth/ swallowing difficulties.

Both Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin are available in syrup form.
If not appropriate convert to:
- Amoxicillin IV 1g tds and Clarithromycin IV 500mg bd (convert to oral as soon as route available for a total 5-7 day course).

If penicillin allergic:
- IV Levofloxacin is NOT available in this hospital.
- Tablets disperse in water after 10 mins if swallowing is difficult.
If not appropriate contact microbiology for advice.

Notes

If not responding to treatment or severe pneumonia please discuss further investigation and treatment with a medical microbiologist.

Review antibiotic therapy in light of microbiology results.
